Alternatives to Traditional Homework

I totally believe in the need to reinforce learning, but, based on what I've seen in my admittedly short time in classrooms, I'm not sure that traditional homework is doing that effectively. I often see kids hurridly copying their classmate's work before the bell, and I know that photos of assignments are sent back and forth via text. Putting aside the obvious academic dishonesty, in these situations, the homework becomes busy work - one more thing to be checked off a list, and it's not doing anyone any good (yes, that includes the teachers who have to grade it). With that in mind, I really like the alternatives to traditional homework assignments listed in this chart from Kathleen Cushman’s Fires in the Mind.
